Authoritarian regimes fear it, yet it is a tool available to anyone of any class. Governments co-opt it, but it achieves the most success when adopted by private citizens. It is soft power – the use of culture to attract and persuade, versus hard power:  facing the barrel of a gun. The chunky rhythms and chomping guitars of rock & roll were the “soft power”-rallying cry for youth living in totalitarian states. Now, in the age of Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, we look back on rock & roll as the first social networking medium, and the inspiration for Radio 930.
